Circuit of Austria a piece of history
The circuit of Austria has a rich history. The track was built in 1969 and named Österreichring. From 1970, Formula 1 races were held where the circuit was known as a high speed circuit. The track was considered too dangerous and due to two major incidents in 1987 the track was removed from the Formula 1 calendar for 10 years.
In 1997, for the first time in years, a Formula 1 race was driven on the circuit that has now been renamed the A1 Ring. Jacques Villeneuve won with his Williams that year.
After a period in which the A1-Ring's existence was highly questionable, Red Bull GmbH became the owner of the circuit and reopened in 2011 under the name Red Bull Ring. The future of Austria's grand prix was secured by signing a 2013 Bernie Ecclestone contract with a 10-year Formula 1 contract, so we will definitely enjoy Formula 1 racing on the Red Bull Ring for a few more Formula 1 seasons !
The grand prix of Austria 2018, a party for Max Verstappen
Valtteri Bottas started the race from pole position but where he was still on the top step of the podium in 2017 to pop the champagne bottle, he had to end the race in 2018 disappointed due to a hydraulic problem with his Mercedes. To make matters worse, the Mercedes of his teammate Lewis Hamilton also failed.
The success of the Mercedes in recent years appears to show some cracks this season. Max Verstappen who dropped out in 2017 with his Red Bull Racing car had an excellent race this year and it was not Ferrari but the Red Bull Racing team that claimed the victory. What a great race it was for Max Verstappen, as the winner he was allowed to celebrate this with Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
